Backpacking in the Deep South

Scenic Highlights of the Deep South!

Here in the Southland, the Otago coast extends from the Waitaki River north of Oamaru to the mighty Clutha River south of Dunedin.

The Waitaki district itself is an astonishing place of haunting natural beauty, drawing travellers from around the globe to its observe its wildlife, idyllic fishing villages and rolling green pastures.

With its striking historical architecture, Dunedin is one of the best preserved Victorian and Edwardian cities in the Southern Hemisphere with hills encircling a long, natural harbour, which is believed to have attracted Maori settlers almost four centuries ago. (railway pic - eg of heritage)

The Clutha district, gateway to the deep south, provides rural experiences, superb fishing and wildlife adventures along majestic sweeping beaches.

Hoiho Penguins, Otago Peninsula, South Island

The Otago Peninsula is home to uncommon and unusual coastal wildlife. Look out for the hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins), little blue penguins and the world's only mainland albatross colony. Sea lions and fur seals also live here.
