We publish an accommodation guide with the aim of providing backpackers with information on hostels that provide a high standard of backpacker accommodation. The accommodation guide is free to everyone and is available on arrival in New Zealand at all VIP Hostels and most Visitor Information Centres.

EVERY HOSTEL has its own DISTINCTIVE CHARACTER and all have very high standards with a real emphasis on SERVICE TO THE BACKPACKER. The establishments listed are all independently owned and operated and will vary according to amenities. Some are purpose-built backpacker hostels, others have budget priced accommodation facilities catering for backpackers.

All hostels have self-cook kitchens, laundry facilities and common areas where backpackers are able to meet and exchange information with fellow travelers. You do not have to be a member to stay at any of the hostels and no institutional rules apply. Linen and blankets are for hire or you may find some hostels have them for free. It is best to bring a sleeping bag.
